Category: Quality and Quantity of Students
Mr N Ventura, University of Cape Town
Fixed Mobile Coverage in the IMS
This project looks at the convergence of Fixed and Mobile Networks and the availability of new features in user entities /terminals and network elements to support the interoperation of access and core networks in Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) to guarantee multimedia quality of service (QoS) and Security in the IMS.
The focus of the project in the 2007-2009 period will be the extensions of interworking models to achieve seamless heterogeneous access in next
generation networks, to provide QoS management within the generic access independent network, and to develop a third generation project partnership compliant IMS core to deploy multimedia services, to provide a secure environment with a comprehensive billing architecture and QoS provisioning.

Ms J De Waal, University of Stellenbosch
Area-wide arthropod pest management
This project aims to integrate area-wide pest management in deciduous fruit, citrus and wine grapes. Sustainable pest management tactics have
already been developed for above crops and integrated into pest management programmes at farm level, but these need to be expanded to an
area-wide scale (regional scale).
Category: Research Collaboration
Prof A Terzoli
Rhodes University
A Media Services Platform for Prototyping and Delivering new services in the IP and LAN environments.
The core research and development effort of this project is aimed at constructing a Distributed Media-Services Platform that is relevant to South African large industry and small business needs and that holds the potential for export.

The development and characterization of carbon materials suitable for use in a PBMR
This project seeks to improve the quality of fuel pebbles which are made up of nuclear grade graphite, to be used in the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor, and to prepare larger samples for evaluation as components of a pebble-bed nuclear reactor.

Dr LA Mckinnell
Rhodes University
Ionospheric modeling, Phase 5: Total electron modeling.
This project is aimed at developing a TEC model to compliment the electron density profile model and help with expanding it into areas not previously covered; the development of a topside ionospheric model for South Africa to add to the bottom-side model developed in a previous project; the continuation of improvements to the regional models that resulted from the previous phases by investigating ionospheric irregularities and other sources of model deviation; and the inclusion of ionospheric models and High Frequency propagation prediction into Space Weather products.

Mr MJD Manamela
University of Limpopo
The design and development of ASR and TTS Synthesis baseline system.
This project aims to develop baseline Automatic speech recognition systems (ASR) and Text-to-Speech Synthesis (TTS) for the main spoken languages of the Limpopo Province, namely Northern Sotho/Sesotho sa Leboa, Tshivenda and Xitsonga (including Setswana as part of the Sotho language cluster).

NSTF BURSARIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE SCIENCE, ENGINEERING,
TECHNOLOGY AND MATHEMATICS STUDENTS
THRIP
focuses on enhancing and extending research cooperation between the
universities, science councils or museums AND industry partners as a
way of improving South Africa’s technological and economic
competitiveness. Since its inception in 1991, THRIP has supported
thousands of postgraduate students, mainly at the masters and
doctoral level thereby contributing to developing appropriate human
resources for industry.
This
year bursaries are being awarded to deserving
undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, or
Mathematics (STEM). This is a collaboration between the NSTF and
THRIP and, each year, two additional students will be awarded a
bursary for the full duration of a three of four year undergraduate
degree.
This
year, individuals from the Free State
province were selected. We will in future years continue to award
bursaries to students from the economically disadvantaged provinces
that do not have easy access to bursaries.
The
FIRST student, to receive this bursary award this evening is Ms Relebohile Alina Tsdaeli
She is enrolled for her first year in Biotechnology at the University of Johannesburg.
• She believes that it is the study of life and the scientific ways of applying technology
to the modern world.
• I quote her: “Biotechnology is one of the factors that can make our
country to become a first world country.
”
The
SECOND recipient of this award is Mr Matsemela Moloi. He is registered first year for BSc in Information Technology at the
University of Johannesburg.
• Computers have been part of his life for some time and he is passionate about computer related issues.
He wants to be part of the change that is being brought on by the use of Technology.
The
THIRD recipient of this award is Mr Thabo Stephen Ngobeni . He is enrolled for his first year Baccalaureus Scientiae:
Materials Science, Department of Computer Science & Informatics at the University of the Free State.
• He chose this because it is the only course that combines Physics and Chemistry and because South Africa
will need scientists like himself to help develop the country in future.
